Chapter 15

Salvage work

Arturo stayed in Lugowalion for a week dealing with various matters needing attention but mostly because he was able to spend time with Morghanna. His officers became used to her being at his side during meetings, official functions and pretty much any other time and began betting with each other as to how soon the wedding would be.

Only one of the remaining officers from the Second was found to be mixed up with Coel’s plot and even then it was largely verbal evidence from the other officers and not entirely convincing. Arturo settled for transferring the fellow to the Sixth after interviewing him personally in an office with only the nearly recovered Briana and one other bodyguard present. Centurion Obwax had protested his innocence profusely and seemed very relieved when Arturo merely said that he was being transferred and not executed.

Ensign Harulex was promoted to Centurion and became Arturo’s new aide although Morghanna now slipped into the role of assistant and in many ways was more of a replacement for Oween than Harulex who found himself mostly being used for strictly military matters. Finally moving south to Dervent Arturo arranged for Morghanna to be housed in one of the new married officer’s buildings at the fort while he went through the situation at Dervent with Valerius. Aurelius Gervonius was promoted to Legate of the First and Valerius then returned to Lugowalion to sit on the Second till the new Legate for that Legion settled into the role and the dead senior officers had been fully replaced.

A decision was reached to try a mixed century in the fourth cohort of the First and the two companies had female soldiers from the training program mixed in. One woman who could read and write to an extant was promoted to ensign but served as a second to one of the male ensigns initially so she could get an idea of the what was involved. There were enough women fully trained to form an entire extra company with more coming so while the mixed century idea was tested the remaining women were designated the first century of the fourth cohort of the new seventh legion and sent north with an experienced centurion and two experienced ensigns as their officers, much to those worthies disgust.

He and Morghanna paid a painful visit to Briffet which consisted of a lot of crying and hugging although Briffet seemed genuinely pleased that Arturo and Morghanna were now courting. Arturo encouraged her to keep involved in the cloth making business despite her pregnancy and promised to not be a stranger. After this, his only real remaining decision was whether he would take Morghanna into the secret of the ship. He spent several days wrestling with this matter without reaching a decision. On the one hand he did not feel he could have a full relationship with her while hiding secrets but on the other he was not sure how she would react.

In point of fact, with Oween’s death, the only person remaining who knew anything about his real origins was Briana.
